Salt of the Earth/Light of the World
Salt of the Earth/Light of the World!
Light to us has become a common place commodity with electricity and a flip of the switch, turn of the remote, etc. Imagine the value of light at night to the people to whom Yeshua was speaking. Imaging just how dark their world was at night. Take in the stark difference between their nights and days, then realize the stark difference Yeshua is calling us to display if we are to be HIS messengers to a dark world. And to carry it further, Yeshua doesn’t just tell us to be a light – HE tells us to be a light that is seen – seen from miles. HE wants us to be seen from afar and wants us to be a light that spills out into the street and illuminates others. HE goes further to say we are to be a light by the way we live, the things we do. HE wants us to live in a way that others see HIM and want to know what we have that they are missing.
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Why did GOD call us salt? When HE created smells HE gave us about 14,000 different ones. But when HE created tastes, HE only made four: bitter, sweet, sour and salty. All flavors come from these four tastes. GOD didn’t tell us we were the bitter, the sweet, or the sour of the earth. HE called us salt on purpose. It wasn’t an arbitrary choice. That means we need to pay close attention to the attributes and characteristics of salt.
Have you ever been in a totally dark room when the light was suddenly switched on? Though it takes a few moments of adjusting, something extraordinary happens. We can see! As our eyes focus, the light gives us the ability to see what we’re doing, where we’re at, and where we’re going. The birth of Yeshua was a lot like that – light shattering the darkness.
Time flows very slowly for the young, the impatient, and the distressed. Adversity seems permanent and overbearing, but its end is so quick that we often forget its terrors. (And by forgetting its terrors we miss out on acquiring much wisdom.)
Yeshua is the light of the world. No matter how tough the times are, no matter what indignities we must suffer in this life, someday the indignities will end and Yeshua’s triumph will be revealed.
In these troubled times, look above the clouds of adversity and see the Light of the World. HE drives the weather in your life; HE brings the rain so that your future won’t be bleak and desolate.
